Diabetes is extremely prevalent in India, affecting more than 62 million individuals, or about 7% of the adult population. It is well known that uncontrolled diabetes can be a precursor for the development of vision-related complications, including diabetic retinopathy and diabetic macular edema, both of which are also very common in India. One study suggested that as many as 20% of individuals with diabetes in India are affected by diabetic retinopathy.
